dir. Cheryl Dunye, 1996, 90 min.
This “fake documentary” stars the director as a fictionalized version of herself. Dunye plays a Black lesbian filmmaker who, captivated by an elusive, queer 1930s black film actress, decides to make a film about her.
Remarks after the film by Patricia White and Eleni Palis. Patricia White is a scholar of feminist film and Eugene Lang Research Professor of Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College. She is author of Women's Cinema, World Cinema and co-author of The Film Experience. Eleni Palis is a PhD candidate in English and Cinema and Media Studies whose dissertation focuses on the reappropriation of classical Hollywood film fragments in contemporary American cinema.
