Ishaare: Gestures and Signs in Mumbai

Dir. Annelies Kusters (2016)

The Hindi and Marathi word "Ishaare" has two meanings, "gestures" and "signs". This Indian and British documentary explores how, in a culture where conversing with hand gestures is commonplace, Deaf and DeafBlind people in Mumbai creatively utilize sign language, lip-reading, gestures, and more to communicate with hearing people.

Film to be followed by discussion with filmmaker Annelies Kusters and Penn's American Sign Language Program Director, Jami Fisher.

Presented by Penn Museum and cosponsored by Penn's ASL Program; Cinema and Media Studies Program; South Asia Center; and Wolf Humanities Center; Deaf-Hearing Communication Centre and Philadelphia Asian American Film and Filmmakers.
