Just down the hall from the Penn Museum’s famous sphinx, the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2022–2023 Forum on Heritage concludes with a staged reading of Oedipus Tyrannos and its tragic resolution of the riddle of the Sphinx. A verse translation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannos by Emily Wilson, whose acclaimed translation of The Odyssey was named by The New York Times as one of its 100 notable books of 2018 and was shortlisted for the 2018 National Translation Award, will be read by Girard College high school students with directorial support from director Brooke O’Harra. Join us as student-readers present this Athenian tragedy about a surprising and horrific uncovering of hidden family heritage.
Cosponsored by the Department of Classical Studies and the Penn Museum.
