I Cannot Tell You How I Feel

Film Screening and Conversation

Su Friedrich

Filmmaker

Presented by the Cinema and Media Studies Program and the Wolf Humanities Center

In I Cannot Tell You How I Feel (dir. Su Friedrich, 2016, 42 min.), acclaimed filmmaker Su Friedrich takes us inside her family’s uncharted world of aging and severe memory loss. Friedrich’s mother Lore plays the lead, kicking and protesting against being moved at the age of 94 from her home in Chicago to an “independent living” facility in New York, while Friedrich and her two siblings fill out the supporting roles — cajoling, comforting, and freaking out. Writes Friedrich, “When my brother, sister and I found ourselves in that place with our mother... our response was to totally freak out, realize we had no idea what needed to be done, and then scramble desperately to figure out which steps to take when.”

Following the screening, Wolf Humanities Center director Karen Redrobe (Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Endowed Professor in Film Studies) and Su Friedrich will discuss family, filmmaking, and more.
